DIY Solar Panel Videos

Here's some helpful Youtube videos that demonstrate nicely how to tab solar cells.

Overview of a Solar Cell, Tabbing Wire and Cell Connections

The first video is a nice primer on what a typical 3" x 6" solar cell looks like and how the cells are hooked together. It gives a clear demo on what length each tab wire should be and how the tab wires are connected between adjacent cells. The dimensions on the video are in mm. The video is 1m 50s long.

Ingenious Method for Cutting Tab Wires

Tab wire comes in one continuous real and has to be cut into many short pieces of equal length.  Most DIY'ers cut them one by one. Here's an ingenious method for cutting a bunch at once. The dimensions on the video are in mm. The video is 57s long.

Soldering Tab Wires To Top of Cell

Here's a nice demo of how to solder the tab wires to a cell.  This video gives a nice close in view so you can actually see the solder flow. This guy adds an extra flux step for improved soldering performance. The video is 3m 25s long.

Soldering Tab Wires To Top of Cell (Another Demo)

Here's another demo of soldering tab wires to a cell. The video starts out a bit jittery but gives a good view of the actual soldering beginning at 1m 00s. Notice the guy is wearing gloves. This is a good idea to prevent oils from the hands getting on the delicate cells. The video is 3m 04s long.

Soldering Tab Wires To Top of Cell (Yet Another Demo)

This guy uses lots of flux paste on his iron to solder the tab wires. The solder appears to flow very nicely. He makes extra passes with the soldering iron to good effect. If you use this technique just make sure you don't overheat the cells. The video is 1m 25s long.
